Theresa White, MAT, C/OGA
Instructor
Theresa White brings a rich blend of policy experience, classroom teaching, and specialized literacy instruction to her role at the Stern Center. She holds a Bachelor’s in Social Work from Providence College and a Master’s in Teaching from Brown University. Her career has been defined by a strong commitment to supporting children and families through both education and advocacy.
Theresa began her professional journey as a Policy Associate at Rhode Island Kids Count, where she spent five years developing impactful recommendations to support statewide programs for children and families. This systemic perspective later shaped her 17-year career as an elementary educator in central Vermont, where she focused on evidence-based teaching to promote academic growth.
Her introduction to structured literacy began in 2016 through the Stern Center’s Classroom Educator training. A transformative experience with a practicum student showed her the power of the Orton-Gillingham approach—not just in boosting reading and spelling, but in rebuilding a student’s confidence and engagement. Inspired, Theresa pursued advanced training, earning both Associate and Certified Level Orton-Gillingham credentials.
In 2024, Theresa joined the Stern Center, driven by her dedication to students with learning differences. She now works closely with students facing reading challenges, providing individualized, research-based instruction to foster both academic skills and self-confidence. Her teaching style blends structured methods with creativity and curiosity, always honoring each student’s unique strengths. Anchored in the belief that literacy is a gateway to opportunity, she embraces Anatole France’s insight: “Nine-tenths of education is encouragement.”
Theresa lives with her family in a solar-powered, strawbale home they built in central Vermont. Outside of teaching, she enjoys hiking, reading, and singing in local choirs. She is proud to be part of the Stern Center’s mission to help all learners thrive.
