Autism Support

Understanding the thinking behind words, actions, and “unwritten rules,” becomes easier with clear and supportive coaching, opening the way to other learning. Practice can also decrease anxiety when navigating everyday barriers. Because communication is vital to inclusion and to self-advocacy, we support neurodiverse learners in pursuit of their goals.

What is Autism and How is it Diagnosed?

Autism affects how people communicate and interact with others and the world around them. People with autism comprise a diverse spectrum, some having significant challenges with communication and independent living, and others experiencing fewer limits. Autism may be described as a disorder and as an identity to be embraced as part of the concept of neurodiversity. An autism evaluation comprises testing, assessments, and a comprehensive background review to identify a learner’s unique abilities and challenges in keeping with their goals.

About Autism and Neurodiversity

Autism looks different from person to person, but can include trouble reading nonverbal cues or picking up “unwritten” social rules; difficulty participating in conversation; speaking with a tone or at a volume that seems different from most others; taking language literally, and not “getting it” as quickly as most when it comes to idioms, riddles, or word-based humor; showing keen “special interest” in certain topics or objects, often unusual ones; repetitive behaviors and movements. Autism affects about one in 36 children in the U.S. and can occur with other conditions.
