Teaching is complex, demanding work, and having a strong network of support makes all the difference.
As the start of September stirs up anticipation of new beginnings, fresh energy, and the joy of new school supplies that carried me through 15 years of teaching, I remember the years that stand out the most: they were the years that I felt the most supported. I thrived when I had mentors to learn from, opportunities to record and reflect on my teaching with a coach, and colleagues I could turn to for inspiration.
That’s why beginning the school year with coaching is so powerful. Early coaching helps teachers establish effective routines, structures, and instructional practices that set the tone for the months ahead. It also creates space for teachers and administrators to identify and align their goals and priorities from the start, ensuring everyone’s energy is directed toward what matters most.
The beginning of the year can feel overwhelming because there’s so much going on! Coaching provides support, reassurance, practical strategies, and a trusted partnership to help teachers navigate their workload and focus on what will have the greatest impact. By reflecting on what’s working and making small adjustments early on, teachers can build routines and strategies that meet the unique needs of their new group of students and launch the year with confidence.
Well-designed and timely coaching doesn’t add to teachers’ plates—it helps clear obstacles and lighten the load for both teachers and administrators. Best of all, it benefits students right away because instruction is targeted and engagement is stronger than when we “go it alone” in the hard work of teaching and education leadership.
