Empowering Learners Through Targeted, Intensive Support

Learning and attention challenges are common in the US, with one in five children having a learning disability like dyslexia or ADHD. With the right support, people who learn and think differently can make great progress in school and go on to lead deeply fulfilling lives.

Our educational specialists provide intensive academic interventions for students struggling with a wide range of learning differences. They use evidence-based practices and tailor lessons to each student’s needs, targeting reading, writing, and math challenges, organizational skills, and more.

Dyslexia Tutoring

It is now possible to screen for and diagnose reading disorders, such as dyslexia, in young children. We treat reading challenges with highly targeted, multisensory approaches, including Orton-Gillingham, developing essential reading skills and empowering learners of all ages to crack the alphabetic code that makes reading possible. In one-on-one sessions, our instructors teach and expand literacy skills and build students’ confidence in themselves as readers and learners.

Signs of Dyslexia

People with dyslexia have trouble reading accurately and effortlessly. They guess at words based on context, struggle with spelling, and have difficulty rhyming and remembering words and facts. Dyslexia can only be diagnosed through testing.

Dyslexia Treatments

There is no quick fix for dyslexia. We teach students using highly structured approaches, such as Orton-Gillingham, to address learners’ unique challenges and abilities and build reading skills in carefully planned, step-by-step ways.

Reading & Writing Interventions

Dyslexia also affects spelling and writing. Dysgraphia, a related disorder, affects writing and the ability to put thoughts on paper. We treat both learning disabilities using targeted, intensive interventions.

ADHD/Executive Function Tutoring

Many aspects of life—including learning—are challenging for those who find it difficult to get organized, manage emotions, keep still, and finish tasks. But with the right support, people with ADHD can thrive. Through individualized instruction and one-on-one attention, we teach students how to develop the critical skills that keep them focused and engaged in learning.

Signs of ADHD

Signs of ADHD—like struggling to pay attention and manage emotions—can appear as early as preschool, but often show up in later grades when school gets harder and there are more tasks to juggle.

ADHD Executive Function Help

We help students develop the self-regulating skills they need to accomplish just about everything in life, including how to learn new things in school or at work.

ADHD Support

We teach strategies that help students develop critical executive function skills, empowering them to take on responsibilities that require focus, organization, and follow-through.

Dyscalculia and Math Tutoring

Dyscalculia is a common learning difference that makes it hard to work with and understand numbers. Our educational specialists help struggling students through research-backed approaches that are rich in multisensory experiences: students can see, hear, and feel math come alive. Instructors work one-on-one with learners to make concepts involving numbers—such as time, speed, measurement, and money—much easier to understand.

Signs of Dyscalculia

Young children may have trouble learning to count or recognizing numbers and basic patterns. Later on, they may struggle to tell time, estimate distance and speed, make change, and more. Learn about dyscalculia testing.

Tutoring in Math

Using proven approaches, we teach math concepts and skills, such as numeracy, addition, multiplication, fractions, early algebraic thinking, and more. Students will learn how to tackle math problems confidently and effectively.

Help With Math Anxiety

Many children and adults feel anxiety and stress about math, and will avoid situations that require math skills. Working one-on-one with students, we build confidence that can calm math-related worries.

What Learners Have to Say

The teacher is amazing! She is a gifted teacher: intelligent, organized, and motivated to build rapport with our child. She wrote a series of decodable texts to match our son’s interests and sent home decodable stories, word lists, and games, so we, as parents, could practice and support our child at home. The teacher was always an email away and showed unwavering support and kindness all year.

Parents of a Stern Center Student

The Stern Center saved our daughter’s life. I love that she can access tutoring remotely. The tutor is a great match for our daughter.

Parent of a Stern Center Student

Our child adores the instructor and really enjoys working with her every week. I think the biggest takeaway, though, has been the newfound confidence in herself as a reader since starting at the Stern Center!

Parents of a Stern Center Student

We have been very impressed with the Stern Center, for both tutoring services and learning evaluations for our daughter. Before we found Stern, she struggled with math and executive functioning—but working weekly with her tutor, her skills improved and her confidence skyrocketed, and she is now thriving.

Parents of a Stern Center Student

This has been the most valuable experience for our family to help us understand our child’s learning profile and instructional needs. The evaluators were incredibly professional, approachable, and, most importantly, able to provide our son’s school team with a clear plan of how to meet his instructional needs.

Middle school student

I really want to thank you again for all your flexibility and the work you are doing with our child.  He is seeing the benefits of all the work he has been doing with you through his SAT practice tests.  He enrolled in a SAT class this summer and scored 650 on a practice test.  He was very happy and mentioned that it is in large part due to the sessions he had with you.

Parent of a high school student

From elementary school through to life as a young adult, I could not ask for a better resource than the Stern Center to help my son continue to grow and learn how to be his best self. The Stern Center truly understands him as a unique person and can explain challenges in a way he can understand with strategies within his reach to implement.

Parent of a Stern Center Student

I would not have had the courage to go to law school, the confidence and success I had in high school or undergrad, if it hadn’t been for the foundational principles the Stern Center taught me.

Zachary Terwilliger, US Attorney

To see the improvement in our son’s literary skills has been life-changing for our family. The Stern Center staff are professional and knowledgeable and easy to communicate with.

Parent of a Stern Center Student

The Orton-Gillingham instruction our daughter has received from the Stern Center has been AMAZING, improving not only her reading abilities but also her confidence.

Parents of a Stern Center Student

The Stern Center has given my daughter a whole new outlook on herself as a learner. She has the tools to problem-solve and figure things out, and all her teachers have noticed a huge improvement in her work since she started instruction….All around, the Stern Center has been a huge blessing for her!

Parent of a Stern Center Student

Our child’s instructor is a wonderfully engaging and kind person and it has been amazing for our child to develop this long-term educational skill-building relationship. We love being able to access the Stern Center resources through remote instruction even though we live far away!

Parents of a Stern Center Student

Our daughter is more confident, feels better about herself as a learner, and is much more successful in school. These are the kinds of outcomes Stern Center delivers. It’s an investment in your child’s future.

Parent of a Stern Center Student

One thing I like about the program is it helps me to know more and to read some of the big words and also improve my reading with short vowels and long vowels.

High school student

I like my whole tutoring session because the teacher makes learning really fun!

Stern Center Student

The most knowledgeable, professional, empathetic, motivating, compassionate, helpful, and understanding, staff and social service agency I have come across.

Parent of a Stern Center Student

Thank you for providing me with the support to get the tutoring I needed at the Stern Center. You made it possible for me to learn and develop the skills I needed to pursue my dream of becoming a writer and illustrator. Reading and writing used to be very hard for me, but now I am reading and writing easily and a lot. My tutor taught me so much, and I really loved my sessions with her!

Scholarship Recipient

Our daughter’s tutoring sessions have been a truly wonderful experience and a real gift. This year has been a time of growth, expansion, and learning. Our daughter is now an avid reader and prolific writer, always with her nose in a book or writing and drawing in her notebook and dreaming up another new story to tell. It’s an indescribable feeling to witness and participate in her learning process as she spreads her winds and is now flying high!

Parent of a Scholarship Recipient

I feel incredibly fortunate to have found the Stern Center for my 10-year-old son who has dyslexia. He has come a long way over these past two years. He has had instruction in-person as well as online and has had success with both platforms. The educators at Stern Center are top-notch and professional! I will be forever grateful for this amazing center!

What is the frequency and length of your instruction sessions?

The number and length of sessions are based on individual needs, schedules, and program requirements. Most students come for one or two hours of instruction per week during the school year in their area of academic need.
